Unloved and Forgotten – China’s Children of Shame | 2014 Documentary
Miao Miao, her brother Xiaolong, and Xin Liao are some of the luckier kids who live in the Sun Villages created by Mrs. Zhang Shuqin. But in reality, they have a heavy past and present to cope with. As the other young dwellers there, they are the offspring of people sentenced to death. This documentary shows the lives and daily routines of these children and their benefactors over two years. Many of the people sentenced to death leave behind young orphans who are not taken care of at all by social services, even when their families or relatives cannot afford to do it.
Also, these vulnerable children are generally despised and rejected by the rest of the community – and are not eligible for adoption. Because as a famous Chinese proverb says: «tigers do not bear puppies».
Like Florence Nightingale, one woman, Mrs. Zhang Shuqin, has decided to turn the children’s destiny into her life’s struggle. She has set up ten orphanages to raise them. In these orphanages, called «Sun Villages», everybody works hard to offer the «children of shame» a more positive future.
@BradyHansen81
Wow! That woman (who runs the orphanage) just became one of my favorite people on the planet. People like her make the world better for everyone and barely anyone knows it.
@KinWong-uw5xz
Is terrible to name the children of shame. kids are innocent in this documentary.. should have better title names.
@junemiller7166
That’s so wrong that they are not adoptable there are people all over who can’t have children and would love to adopt one of these little ones and give them a good home and a future.
@junemiller7166
Geez the prison scene with the crying and all is traumatic those poor kids!
@PandaHead602
Look at grandpa he has so much joy to watch his grand kids
@GenaF
Those poor kids taken to the prison to get dads permission… talk about screwing their brains up. The boy was only 3, never knew his parents and there he is with a bawling and ranting granny and aunty meeting him but being told he will soon be dead WTAF?
@Dusty3030
Seems the children are loved and not forgotten. Bless grandmother Zang and rip their parents.
@SomethiingClever
A 9yo working 10hr days in a textile factory. “I didn’t like the work, I had to keep my head bent and it gives me back pains”. I can’t believe her grandmother took her out of Sun Village. What life does she get now? One of poverty and endless shaming. How messed up and sad.
@carstenkh
I am sad that the staff tells the children that their parents are no good – what trauma these children see, hear and experience
@johnbeans2000
Always the children that suffer
@ChumLee-wo7hs
Stop yelling in front of those bloody children…you are scaring them.
@audreylaferriere
This should be viewed by everyone.
An exceptional documentary. Thank you.
@Alan_GA
@9:49 ” I hope you’ll behave yourself in heaven….”
The distraught mother’s honest brutality. Took me out

@felicityjohnston9276
Right cuz no way he would be going there
@Gladiator23-34
Some strong heart is necessary to watch this.
@ohmzen
Next level GangStalking! I really hope these innocent kids can endure this injustice and manage to get a meaningful life full of love and appreciation JUST like they deserve.
@SuperHutomo
This must be old documentary, no smartphone users are sighted
@ENDEVRDocs 2014 so smartphones existed.
@PandaHead602
@ENDEVRDocs not as popular as now .
@pearls1626
They are struggling for food, clothing and other necessities. Who will donate phones?
@caridadhilaire2048
So many people with money can’t have kids, and they should adopt them. The kids are innocent and didn’t commit any crimes.
@whitneyanders5945
Agreed. So much suffering could be prevented if people were not irresponsible and if religion and warped traditions weren’t a thing.
@Ukgyt99
37:13
doctors. The Lanterns at night looked beautiful.
@lenjon7478
I don’t understand why they give the children the idea they have to be ashamed of them self instead of give them some support.
@pmc2999
It’s a different culture. I don’t think the orphanage does so much but they still have to live in the real world and that’s how they are viewed. Also Chinia is still a communist country and if that’s what is taught by the government it must be accepted. Right at the beginning she started the orphanage because the children of executed prisoners are not allowed in regular orphanages or allowed to be adopted.
@evielknievel4972
Anything a parent does (even before children are born) has a consequence on your kids.
@user-xx6ud8iq7g
Not really, or at least not here. What country are you in?
@evielknievel4972
@user-xx6ud8iq7g Anyone who believes that their parents’ actions do not affect the child is delusional.
@kelseyspivey9644
I know its an entirely different culture, and i mean no disrespect, but watching that grandma, and others scream at the childrens father on death row was incredibly difficult to watch, especially knowing it may be the childrens last time ever seeing their father!! They are young enough, that they probably wont remember it anyway, but they may grow up and see this documentary, and most of the footage is their father being screamed at!! I cried watching it!! lol You just want to scream enough already!! He knows what he did, and im sure he is incredibly sorry, and feels horrible!! Don’t ruin the last time this man will ever see his kids!! Yikes!! lol
@Emily-uq3to
The poor kids visiting their dad in prison while everyone’s yelling and crying they must have been so scared.
@Thunderpaws111
The culture in China regarding punishment seems similar to that of North Korea. ( Whole families punished. Shunning. There is no rehabilitation, no second chance.) Mrs Zhang is a wonderful blessing to the children, they seem well-fed, clean and cared for. Thank God for Mrs. Zhang!
@LeahBrooksJeremiahGardens
How could anyone take revenge on children? Such evil is unfathomable.
@user-ku9oj4bf6j
this hurts. It should not matter but it hurts.
@Societiestoday
This film reveals the embodiment of pain and suffering that are not so familiar to most people. These children will also grow up to be treated with contempt by society people because of how they look and behave, without the knowledge of their life experiences. That little girl who started bending her neck for 10hrs everyday at the age of 9 working in a factory will grow up looking timid and bended. She would be called ugly and every derogatory word, and thereby limit her life chances. The government is actually doing more harm by neglecting children of incarcerated parents.
@user-oi8wt3rk6s
I was abandoned 63 years ago in the United States, when I was 5. I was adopted and given a good life. Many times I was told how wonderful my parents were to adopt me because you never know how adopted children will turn out. I was constantly told by total strangers to be appreciative. It is traumatizing. These children will spend their entire lives as outcasts. Such a shame that societies don’t value children for themselves, instead of judging them by the actions of their parents. I adopted an abandoned child. They are as important as any child born into stable families. I understand that China will never help these children because they use shaming as a means to curb crime.
@tensaijuusan4653
There are thousands of childless married couples who would happily adopt one or more of these adorable children – how sad.
@felicityjohnston9276
Why are they screaming and crying like that?! They’re making it harder for the children ! also, idk how his mother expects him to go to heaven after being executed……
@suzannemartin6817
Wow that prison reunion was just awful! How traumatic for everyone. And the man’s mother “you ruined everything!” Right in front of his children she said that. And instead of a memory for dad it was an occasion liked with shame! That was just terrible! It would have been better if the dad could have hugged them and read a story rather than played a game so the children would have a happy moment to remember.
@cassiemhalliday770
I can’t wrap my head around the fact that Little Dragon and his sister are left in an orphanage. How can an entire village or even their society reject innocent kids? I am baffled. What did the kids do? How can an adult society do that! WOW! MY UTMOST RESPECT for the grandad. There’s a special place in heaven for him. The Quran teaches us how to treat orphans. He is assured paradise!
@reja1309
It is such hypocrisy to take and accept organs from executed prisoners but their children are rejected.
@lauralimweeheang4914
I pray that the laws of adoptability will change. These children should not be made to bear and carry the sins of their condemned parents. Making them unadoptable deepens their trauma, self-confidence, dignity. I also pray that the children will see that their past do not define their future. To the ones who made it in life, may they continue to succeed in life. To those who are still trying, may they continue to try. It is not how many times you fall but how many times you get up and move on. All the best and blessings to the children and the benefactors of Sun Villages.
@iva9546
7:40 this made me so mad!! why are you yelling at the poor grandma for being sad that her great-grandkids are going away?
@anne-mareeosborne8718
Wow you are amazing..you don’t have shame in my country kids..live well.
@jasedent7231
Omg I’m scarred from watching the mother yell at her son in front of the children ! I know they are! !!! My god! And my son thinks he has a bad life!
@terrylynn9984
How awful the sins of the parents are not passed onto these children. The children are innocent, what kind of messed up mentality is a society that rejects these poor kids.
@PandaHead602
Very lucky to have grandpa.
@valmir144
A mother is a mother. the son is a killer and the mother is chanting that he is going to heaven!
@Littleleoshouse
Son is a murderer. “You will go to heaven” pft
PFT | What Does PFT Mean?
“Sound made in disagreement” is the most common definition for PFT on Snapchat, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
@aliunngom7979
Why are they blurring images of death/dying? Am I a kid?
@felicityjohnston9276
As far as i know organs given to others arent sold they are donated so why would he think that someone would give his family money for them?….
@lunastarr1925
NO CHILD IS A SHAME….EVERY CHILD IS PRECIOUS

AND THEY R NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR OTHER’S WRONGDOINGS
@citroniron8861
10:00 I don’t understand the culture of screaming at your son in front of the children. I know he did something wrong and is held accountable but those kids don’t deserve to see that. They should have a happy memory if this is the last time they see their father.
@lisaschmidt8466
I have a feeling there are innocent people in those prisons too.
@GM-lq7sw
But it is not the Chinese government….they have the rules…you as father or mother….why do you need to first have children….if you have no means to support them….and then, risk your life .. I don’t understand.
@1timbarrett
The Chinese people I have met so far, are smart. They will figure out (if they haven’t already) that EPIGENETICS outweighs GENETICS every time.
Your genes play an important role in your health, but so do your behaviors and environment, such as what you eat and how physically active you are. Epigenetics is the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes work.
