On April 5, the first contact between humans and aliens took place when the Vulcan shipĀ TāPlana-HathĀ landed in Bozeman, Montana. It had been tracking theĀ warp signatureĀ of theĀ Phoenix, the first human ship to reach warp drive speeds ā a speed created by its pilot, Dr. Zefram Cochrane. A VulcanĀ disembarked from theĀ TāPlana-HathĀ and greeted Dr. CochraneĀ with a split-fingeredĀ Vulcan saluteĀ and the words, āLive long and prosper.ā This meeting laid the groundwork for the Creation of the United Federation of Planets. The meeting was documented in the filmĀ Star Trek: First Contact, which was released in 1996. Since the release of the film,Ā Star TrekĀ fans ā known as Trekkies (or Trekkers) ā have embraced the day. April 5 was the day of first contact because one of the screenwriters ofĀ Star Trek: First Contact, Ronald D. Moore, made it the same day as his oldest sonās birthday.

Star TrekĀ was created by Gene Roddenberry. What became known as Star Trek: The Original SeriesĀ debuted in 1966 and ran for three seasons on NBC. Set in the twenty-third century, it followed the Starship USSĀ Enterprise, captained by James T. Kirk, who was played by William Shatner.Ā Star TrekĀ gained a cult following and Trekkies were born. BesidesĀ The Original Series, there have been five other television series:Ā Star Trek: The Next Generation,Ā Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,Ā Star Trek: Voyager,Ā Star Trek: Enterprise, andĀ Star Trek: Discovery. There has also beenĀ an animated seriesĀ and numerousĀ films ā includingĀ Star Trek: First Contact. Toys, comics, novels, figurines, and other things related to the series were also created. On First Contact Day, we celebrate the first meeting of humans and aliens, the film that documented it, and everything else that isĀ Star TrekĀ related.
